SASSA Shuts Down Viral Rumors About Pension Changes

In a swift and decisive move, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has denied all social media claims suggesting new pension rule changes set for June 1, 2025. The agency confirmed that all pension-related grants will continue as usual, with no policy adjustments or additional verification steps required.

This clarification comes after widespread panic was triggered by viral messages on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and TikTok, alleging pension reductions and stricter requirements. SASSA’s official statement has laid these claims to rest, urging beneficiaries to rely solely on verified government communication.

SASSA Warns Against Fake Social Media Posts

SASSA confirmed that no changes will be made to age, income, or residency criteria for the Older Persons, Disability, and War Veterans Grants. The agency reassured grant recipients that they do not need to reapply, update documents, or visit any SASSA offices unless they receive a direct notification.

These false rumors led to widespread anxiety among older citizens who depend on SASSA grants for survival. Officials highlighted that misinformation such as fake documents, edited videos, and voice notes were the root cause of the confusion.

SASSA emphasized that any real changes in grant policies are always announced via the official website, press releases, or government gazettes — never via viral messages.

Current Rules and Payment Dates Remain Intact

SASSA continues to follow the Social Assistance Act in distributing grants. This includes existing requirements for citizenship, residency, and income limits. For single applicants, the income threshold remains at R96,840 per year, with the asset limit set at R1,372,800.

There is no need for in-person re-verification unless beneficiaries are directly contacted due to fraud concerns or outdated documents. If you haven’t received a formal notification, no action is required.

For June 2025, the payment schedule remains unchanged:

  • Older Persons Grant: Monday, June 3
  • Disability Grant: Tuesday, June 4
  • Children’s Grants and Others: Wednesday, June 5 onward

Payments will be processed as normal through bank accounts, retail partners, or SASSA cards. No new payment systems will be introduced at this time.

How to Stay Informed and Report Misinformation

Beneficiaries are encouraged to use these channels to check their grant status:

If you receive suspicious messages, do not forward them. Instead, report them directly to SASSA. Make sure senior citizens are aware that no new requirements have been implemented and advise them to ignore unverified sources.

SASSA’s prompt clarification has brought peace of mind to millions of pensioners. The agency assures South Africans that any changes will always be made public through trusted, official platforms.
