Brace for Blackouts: City Power Announces Planned 8-Hour Power Cuts Across Johannesbur
Johannesburg residents are set to experience a challenging week ahead. On top of the freezing winter temperatures, City Power has confirmed a schedule of eight-hour planned power outages across various regions in the city.
The utility provider will implement these load interruptions as part of its routine maintenance programme, running from 10 June to 15 June. The purpose is to upgrade aging infrastructure and improve long-term power reliability.
The planned outages will affect four City Power regions, impacting multiple suburbs and critical services. Each interruption will last approximately eight hours per day, depending on the location.

On Tuesday, two separate regions—Region F and Region G—will be affected.
In Region F, maintenance at The Fort Substation will result in outages from 9am to 5pm, affecting key roads including:
- Wanderers Street

Meanwhile, Region G residents will face power cuts from 8am to 4pm, due to scheduled work at Lunar Substation. Suburbs impacted include:
- Finetown
- Grassmere Tollgate
- Lenasia South Ext.4
- Migson Manor
- Univalle
These Tuesday interruptions are only the beginning of a week filled with scheduled outages.
Noordwyk Area Targeted for Midweek Maintenance
Wednesday, 11 June, will see disruption in Region A, particularly Noordwyk Extension 43, as maintenance continues.
Power will be unavailable between 9am and 5pm, with areas affected including:
- Protea Street
- Alwyn
- Shell Filling Station
- Deoder Avenue
- Westbrook and parts of 8th Road
Residents in these areas are advised to prepare ahead for the blackout period.
Final Maintenance Set for Sunday in Region A
The final planned interruption for the week is scheduled for Sunday, 15 June, at the Ethor Johnson Switching Station, also in Region A.
Power supply will be suspended from 9am until 5pm, affecting surrounding communities as technicians work on network upgrades.
City Power reiterated that these interventions are part of a city-wide infrastructure improvement strategy. The goal is to ensure a more stable and efficient power supply in the long run.
City Power Issues Safety Reminder for All Residents
City Power has urged all affected customers to treat their electrical outlets as “live” during the scheduled outages, warning that power could be restored at any moment.
In its public announcement, the utility apologized for the inconvenience but highlighted the importance of these upgrades. “We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but the work is critical to delivering better services,” City Power stated.
Residents are encouraged to take precautionary measures and plan their week accordingly, as Johannesburg faces a cold, dark week ahead.
