South African parents relying on state support can breathe easy this week as SASSA Children’s grants for June 2025 are scheduled to be paid out on Thursday, 5 June. Despite early concerns around government spending in 2025, the Department of Social Development has committed to keeping child grants flowing, including increases from April’s budget adjustment.
Every month, the South African government distributes billions of rands to financially support struggling parents and guardians. In fact, Children’s Grants now make up the largest portion of SASSA’s total grant spending.
How Much Are SASSA Children’s Grants in June 2025?
If you’re new to how these grants work, here’s a quick breakdown. All child-related SASSA payments fall under three main categories:
- Child Support Grant: R560 per month per child
- Care Dependency Grant: R2 310 per month for children with disabilities
- Foster Care Grant: R1 250 per month for court-appointed foster parents
Each child can only receive one type of grant, and only one parent can claim per child — even in the case of married couples. However, there is no limit to how many children you can apply for.
These grants are vital. For example, while R560 per child may seem small, over 14 million children benefit from it each month — a staggering amount in state funding.
Who Qualifies and How to Apply
To qualify for SASSA Children’s grants for June 2025, you must pass a means test — there is no asset test involved. Here’s the income criteria:
- Single parents: Must earn less than R4 400 per month (R52 800 annually)
- Married couples: Joint income must be under R8 800 per month (R105 600 annually)
Your child must be under 18 years old, and you cannot receive another SASSA grant (like Disability or Old Age) for the same person. Applications can take up to three months, but if approved, you will be back-paid to the date of application. If your application is rejected, you have 90 days to appeal via the Department of Social Development.
How to Register a Newborn for SASSA
Before you can apply, your child must be registered with the Department of Home Affairs through their eHome portal. Without an official unabridged birth certificate and ID, you won’t be able to apply for any SASSA Childcare support.
Once registration is complete, visit the SASSA online booking system and prepare for an in-person appointment. Bring the following documents:
- Your and your spouse’s ID documents
- Child’s official birth certificate and ID
- Proof of marital status
- Three-month bank statement
- Proof of income
- Proof of address (not older than three months)
Only court-approved foster parents are eligible for Foster Child grants, and Care Dependency grants require a medical assessment by a government-appointed doctor.
